Nerdsplosion: Time to see someone else…

It’s GW price hike time, and wow, just wow. While it’s not unexpected, there are 3 numbers that jump out at me immediately. The first and most obvious is the storm raven clocking in at $99, holy eff. The next two are land raider at $75 and the Rhino at $37. Honorable mention goes to the Predator at $57.

Who is Your (Robot) Master?

By Remy

From a light bulb to a fan, from a Dust Buster to a Zippo lighter; The Mega Man series has unleashed some of the most dangerous household items upon its supporters for almost 25 years. Today is the day that we start a vote to discover the single most dominating, bad ass robot master of the original Mega Man series (1-8).

The way it will work, we here at Nerdsplosion will walk through one game in the series until we have discovered the top eight Robot Masters. The top eight will be ranked based on most votes received and it will be a head to head vote from that point on.

Welcome our latest…

I am happy to announce the arrival of a new writer to Nerdsplosion, Remy. Here is a bit more about our newest program:

I am the last remaining member still living in the frozen tundra. I am a full-time student in or around the Twin Cities. I speak fluent movie quotes and I have seen every awesome sci-fi movie more than I would like to admit.

My biggest nerd obsessions are sci-fi films as well as Television shows. I love zombies and vampires more than the norm. I spend the majority of my time playing video games and procrastinating. I am an avid comic book collector mainly of the original X-Men as well as more recent comics such as The Walking Dead.

I am a huge Soccer nerd and I always will be. My one wish is that I live through a zombie apocalypse before the Robotic takeover of Earth.

Back Where We Started (sort of)

So we’ve been half assedly writing this blog for about a year now (officially on May 29, happy birthday, us), and while things haven’t gone exactly as planned, I think we’ve done alright. Taking a look back through our archives it’s easy to see that our most “popular” posts have been our attempt to do analyses of GW’s various business decisions, legal entanglements, and financials.

On that note, we are once again at the time when GW should be releasing it’s annual report shortly. We know that they will once again be paying dividends to share holders. Without the report we don’t have the full picture, not that it matters to people as the internetz have exploded into the usual camps.

We’re Making Progress: Morits Engine

So I finally got around to painting my Mortis Engine. I have to say it was actually much easier than I was expecting (dry brushing helps a ton). It’s not master class by any stretch, but it is one of my better big models. All in all it’s not too shabby.

A few more pics after the jump and a brief discussion of painting steps.

Random Nerd Thoughts

Yeah, I know it’s been a while. Such is life. After a more than a month, I am back on the nerd horse. I’ve finished Mass Effect 3, which was actually the last post I wrote before this lull, am just about finished with my Vamp Army, and have been reading a lot of nerdy books. Here are a few random nerd thoughts that occurred to me over the last several weeks.

The Beginning of the End(ings)

ME3

Just a quick post since I am out from under the rock of Mass Effect 3. All in all, I thought the game was excellent. A few minor complaints aside the game was well thought out, the primary missions were great and the the side quests were relatively unobtrusive (though finding people was sometimes a pain). I think the consensus surrounding the game is generally positive with one asterisk, the endings.

Spoilers follow, but if you don’t know by now, that’s your own fault.

Wolves and Tervigons and Lawsuits, Oh My….

Look, I’m not going to jump on the GW is stupid for releasing these kits late, “why wait two years, rawr,” band wagon. I get that it’s frustrating. The worst part isn’t the waiting, we know that they were acting on the advice of some lawyer. While I am not an IP expert, it is clear that these conversion kits were derivative works under U.S. Copyright Law. As I said here, I think that the main reason for holding these kits back was to ensure that they could demonstrate harm to their business, as that can be a huge (See: music industry lawsuits). Since the market is a niche one, and GW still practically a monopoly, it stands to reason that they would have a hard time demonstrating harm to their business if they did make the release and then sold a ton.

While the comparison may be a bit of apples to oranges, it is still legit. Now what is the real issue? No, it’s not all you poor fanboiz that converted your own Tervigon’s and thunder pups. It’s the fact that the initial delay provided these secondary outlets the chance to fill the abyss GW threw their customers into. This mess is GW’s own doing. They held releases and let some enterprising gamers take it upon themselves to provide what they would not.

I really like their Tervigon model, and it is yet another testament to the quality of their sculpt team. It will be interesting to see if we can get an indication of the sales numbers in a month or two and if the late release had a negative effect. I assume the Tervigon model won’t sell as well as it may have. I have the feeling that the wolves will be fine as they are still regarded as one of the top 3 books for 40k.

As for the litigation, one of the two suits that GW was involved in has been settled and the release has seemingly gone forward as a result. It’s still not clear if Chapterhouse is going to settle or not. At this point it’s impossible to forecast, the one thing is that they have definitely gone all in with their derivative work. I assume that they were told by their lawyer to go in like this to further their negotiating position in a settlement, it’s counterintuitive, I know. The other thing is that by going all in they may be able to demonstrate that their work is not a harm to GW’s business, but a creative alternative for a specialist product.

It will be interesting to see where this ends up.

Feeling the (Mass) Effect(s)

Like most of you, I am playing the waiting game, and it sucks. Waiting for Mass Effect 3 is brutal, I have started my 5th play through of ME 2 trying to get a feel for the combat again. I’ve played the demo a few times and I am pumped. Everything about it seems  better, the combat is more fluid, the movement is crisper, and it just looks phenomenal. Watching the Reapers tear Earth apart is absolutely epic.

There are a few things that stood out while I was playing through the demo and going back to the ME 2 system, made me very excited about the game. Let’s have take a quick peek at some things in the demo that point to what we have to look forward to.
